Don’t think software, think school improvement – lessons from Sweden

Don’t think software, think school improvement – lessons from Sweden

What is the cost of not getting started?

During BETT you look into and meet several suppliers of online solutions for schools and choose one to implement. Two years later you realise that only a fraction of the system is used by colleagues. Your pupils and their parents are already advanced Internet users. What is the cost of not getting started?

Launching in the UK at BETT 2012 InfoMentor is a collaborative learning and assessment solution that has enjoyed considerable success in over 1000 schools across Sweden and Iceland.

Mats Rosenkvist, Director of InfoMentor Sweden believes he knows why InfoMentor has succeeded where other school software solutions have failed to deliver on their promises. ”In Sweden, implementation services are bundled together with InfoMentor which is an approach that has changed the way schools and Local Authorities think about school improvement, personalised learning and parental engagement.”

To implement a web based system for school development is an exercise in leadership that continues for a number of terms. But it is not only about leadership – it is also about changing human behaviour and at the same time improving processes. First and foremost it is about changing the behaviour of teaching staff to change old routines and use a system’s potential to support and improve learning, planning, teaching, assessment and collaboration.

Step 4 in our 15-step model for successful implementation. Initially it is about the head teacher writing down, communicating and establishing the objectives and the vision of the whole school. To be able to do that and to be able to carry out implementation and managing the system, the head teacher needs to create a winning team with the right mix of ambitions, personalities and experiences.

In the UK InfoMentor will be supported by the organisation Leadership for Children and Young People to support schools, Academies and Local Authorities with successful implementation.
